HIKING AND WALKING -

The Tatra mountains offer some fantastic mountain scenery. The region is a paradise for walkers with over 600km of trail, excellently maintained and signposted. The Tatra foothills can be reached by foot from the Chalet and the High Tatra National Park trails can be explored by a 20-minute drive (transport included). Alternatively we offer fully escorted hikes and walks. There is also the Liptovska Mara (lake) to stroll round, the river Vah that runs through town, or pretty villages in the surrounding area.

The High Tatras loom over the Liptov plain; massive stone sentinels fronted by the classic-formed peak of Krivan, the national symbol of Slovakia's journey to independence. They are the most impressive and highest part of the Carpathian Mountians, curving their way from Bratislava, through the Czech Republic, Poland, the Ukraine and ending in Romania.  Nearly 100 of the 500 peaks in the High Tatras reach above 2000m. The region is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, giving strict protection to its' diversity of nature and wildlife.

dramatic mountain lodgeThe mountains are steep and aggressive from a far, though once amongst them you will find quiet villages tucked away, hidden lakes and mountain chalets.  Meandering paths through meadows and forest, within sight of the soaring vertical heights abovegive way to high alpine scrambling, where a head for heights is amust. A first-rate network of trails riddle the Tatras (and the three surrounding National Parks) and immerse the walker in gorgeous mountainous scenery. A map of the local hiking area can be found here.

A very good first-timers' hiking account can be found here, and an informative guidebook entry here.

Maps, advice, suggestions and info will be available throughout your stay.  We will also endeavour to accompany you, if you so wish.

Gorge-Walking in the Slovak Paradise NP -

More challenging possibilities are the unique gorge walks of 'Slovak Paradise'.  Many of the gorges are accessible only by hand-built wooden platforms, rails and ladders which suspend you above the river. This is an region of exceptional beauty, recognised and protected as a National Park for it's rare flora and fauna.  There are few places where it is possible to encounter such a varied landscape - meadows, chasms, canyons, gorges, plateaux, caves and waterfalls within such a small area.  Although the elevation of the walks are not particulary high (500 - 1,700 m) there is some negotiating along the ravines which requires the use of hand-built ladders, hand rails and chains.  A head for heights is required....
This is also an ideal day trip to tie in with a visit to Spis Castle - one of the largest castles in Central Europe.
Guiding included.

Many mountain Chatas at beautiful locations offer refreshment and accommodation-all at excellent prices. A particular feature of the highest passes in the High Tatras is the extensive provision of iron ladders, handrails and chains whenever there is requirement.  The landscape of the region is extremely varied; the choice of grade, distance, elevation, scenery and nature is yours to make.
Maps, suggestions and guiding all available.
